THE END

The last showing of the new Brazilian movie was what the couple had planned on watching. They met up with another couple at the theater who managed to get last minute seats. Their relationship was a bit on the rocks but she knew that she had to make changes if she wanted the relationship to last.
They had been married for seven years now and the itch was becoming unbearable. However, when together with other people, the husband behaved as a gentleman always polite and courteous – just in front of other people.
On that night the husband wanted to go and see the movie which was a miracle because he was a stay-home type of guy. The wife was feeling a bit under the weather that night but she realized that she would have to go. Actually it would be better than going into a row over the fact that her body and head ached from a cold and she needed the rest. Nonetheless she bundled up in a warm jacket and went.
Meeting up with their friends was always a pleasant event. They were not a boyfriend- girlfriend couple because their sexual preferences did not match, but they were lively and fun people to be around and the wife always got good laughs when that happened. The husband, on the other hand, did not like them that much because they were his wife´s long-life friends and he just became part of the story when they had started dating.
As they said their hellos they quickly went to their seats for the movie was about to begin. Not too much time to chit chat, the husband was relieved. This movie theater was new to them for it was in the middle of the new mall that had been inaugurated a few weeks prior to this event.  Because the couple had never been there before, they got there just in the nick of time to make it to their seats with the lights on.
The lights went down and the movie started. The wife started to feel drowsy therefore she laid her head on her husband´s shoulder and fell asleep. Afterall the medication she was taking was quite heavy and the movie started off at a slow pace. There was nothing else she could do but fall asleep.
All of a sudden she woke up startled. The lights were on again and the theater was empty except for a guard who was shaking her awake. She looked around and noticed that everyone was gone, including her husband and friends. Where had everyone gone? How could they just have left her there? Where did they go to?
`Madame you must leave. We are closing now.´
`Oh yes. But where did everyone go?´
`I don´t know Madame. The show ended fifteen minutes ago.´
She got up and made her way out of the theater. She felt a bit air-headed. How was she going to get home? She looked at her watch and it was past one in the morning. The freezing wind hit her face as she stuck her head out the mall doors. A freaky chill ran up her spine.  She somehow realized that she was going to have to face this situation alone.  As she walked down the sidewalk looking for a cab, she bumped into a few people who roamed the night. Every time that someone rubbed against her, she had a gut feeling that something horrible was going to happen.
She walked and walked but it seemed like all the taxis where on strike and none where to be found. Fear filled her as she tried to make heads or tails of what happened. How was she getting home? Did she still have a home to go to? None of this was making sense to her.
For one moment, just one moment it dawned on her that she might still be asleep and this was just a dream. But no, it felt so real. She even pinched herself to check. What was she to do? Perhaps it was just the medication fooling around with her senses and none of this was happening.
Slowly she set her emotions aside and looked in her purse for her cell phone. It was gone. She never left the house without her phone. Something very strange was going on.  She saw a twenty-four hour drugstore and entered to search in her bag better. Sometimes a woman’s purse can be a black hole. Women tend to put stuff in their bags, look for it, cannot find it and then when they look again, like magic it appears. However, this was not the case. She emptied her bag and even shook it.
‘Excuse Miss, can I help you?’
‘Oh, I can’t seem to find my cell phone. Never mind. May I use your phone?’
‘Certainly. This way please.’
She followed the clerk over to the counter and dialed her home number.
‘The number you have reached 9876-3210 has been disconnected or not working. Please call assistance.’
She decided to call her husband cell phone. Nothing. Not even a toll.
‘Excuse me but can I use your computer.’
‘I am sorry miss, but I am afraid that we do not carry those in the drugstore.’
‘What do you mean?’ she was starting to feel a chill run up her spine.
‘I am afraid I do not even know what that is.’
She was starting to panic. ‘Excuse me sir, what is the date today?’
‘Well, it is June 27, 1980.’
She started to feel dizzy. How could she have fallen asleep in 2014 and then out of the blue wake up in 1980? What now?
As she sat there on the drugstore floor, a man dressed in black wearing a black hat walked in and headed towards her. He said her name as he got closer.
‘Yes, that is me. Do I know you?’
‘I have a message for you.’ The way he said it freaked her out.
‘A message?’
‘Here it is.’
He handed her a piece of paper and on it she read THE END. It all made sense to her now. She had seen that man before but in books and in her dreams. Just like that it was over.
