Hit by a Truck

It was the end of a long hard day; while he drove home he tried to remember the ups and downs. It would be a 30-minute drive to his house, that is, if there was no traffic on the highway. He didn’t really enjoy the drive because as of 10 pm the trucks were allowed on the city highways.

In this city there was a law in which trucks were prohibited on the city highways and streets from 7am to 10 pm. However, the shops needed their merchandise and the trucks had to make their deliveries. They managed to do this at night between 10 pm and 7 am.

When this law came out, the truck drivers were very angry and protested against the government throwing reasons at them why it wouldn’t be a good law, it hadn’t been thought out. The government claimed that they had come up with the law because the traffic in the city was unbearable, therefore, measures needed to be taken to get rid of the clutter of vehicles on the city streets and highways and this was just one of them. The truck drivers however, claimed that having to work these hours would be dangerous. They mentioned theft, hold ups, accidents and several others. Nonetheless, the law had been passed.

He turned on his radio and drove along the dimly lit road when all of a sudden he heard a loud bang, then another, then another and his car was thrown over to the opposite side of the road. He knew his car had spun although for him everything seemed to happen in slow motion. He checked to see if everything was all right with him before getting out of the car because it had been a pretty heavy blow. He got out of the car which had been totally destroyed- the glass was shattered, the traffic indicators were broken , the number plate was hanging by a thread- the car had been totaled.

Suddenly his legs started shaking. The adrenaline rush moved upwards along his body. It dawned on him that he could have died. He looked back as he heard someone screaming. He could not believe his eyes. Four trucks had collided. He shrieked. The second truck was small and the driver’s seat had been crushed, the person who was screaming was its driver.

The man in torment screamed and screamed but there was nothing anyone could do. The other drivers just walked towards that truck and told the driver that help was on its way. The driver screamed, yelled, cried, pleaded until there was total silence.

What a sad hard day it had been. Although he was sad because he had witnessed the death of a man, he felt blessed that his life had been spared.
