Inside the hut, under the staircase as soon as you
walked in, just three steps, there was an extremely low moan that my ears
picked up. One of the students held a bat while I lifted the board that was
covering the hole. An old beat-up man jumped out screaming “They are coming.
They are coming.” He scared the bejesus out of us, and we fell backwards onto
the floor. It was difficult to calm him down to question him about who they
were. “Sir, who are you talking about?” He had no time to answer. As he shrieked,
his shaking finger pointed to the doorway as a gigantic red furry spider -
similar to tarantulas but larger - crawled in; not only one, but quite a few. “Them,”
squealed the old man.
The spider quickly devoured the old man. There was nowhere
to hide or run. We were each bitten by a spider but unlike the old man, we just
fell into a deep sleep.
When we awoke, we were in a nearby city. It looked
like a regular city and people were going on with their business. Since I was a
teacher, I was taken to a classroom and instructed to do my job. It was
stronger than me. I wanted to question what was happening but instead, I just
taught a lesson and the students miraculously participated and did what was
asked of them.
During dinner time, the whole town gathered at a
community kitchen where we were served red meat and water to drink. My desire
to eat that almost raw red meat surprised me because up until the day before, I
was a vegetarian. However, that red meat surely hit the spot and satisfied my
needs.
After dinner, we were led to our rooms. The evening
was very painful for everyone´s body transformed into gigantic red spiders.
However, in the morning, we had returned to our human state.
In the
morning, I woke up with a growling stomach and parched in addition to very
painful joints and bones. Guess that being transformed into a spider was not a
dream after all.
Breakfast
was served at the community kitchen, so was lunch and dinner. However, ever the
city had changed. It seemed like we were in another place. How this happened
beats me. There was no time for me to make sense of the whole situation and, in
fact, no one was available to talk about it. All meals were red meat and water.
My job
was to teach. I did notice that there were newer students and some of the ones
that had been in the classroom the day before were missing. No questions were
to be asked. However, I noticed that after dinner, we transformed into other
creatures, for instance, hamsters, cats, dogs and so on. Each day this happened,
and, in the morning, we woke up in a different city.
As meat
was scarce, there was a voluntary butcher shop where people were slaughtered so
that the rest of us could be fed. You could tell people were disappearing, so
you weren't sure if there were experiments going on or if people had become
dinner that night. Surely what I could feel was the painful transformation.
Tired of
doing the same thing, eating the same thing and not being able to just enjoy
life, I was drawn to the butcher shop. I couldn´t understand why though. It was
as if some magnetic force was pulling me inside. I should have known that this
day would come. I was to be that evening’s dinner. Waiting in the line, it was
as if I had been freed from the spell that I was under. To my horror, controlling
everything there were tiny gray creatures with bright purple eyes escorting
people into a gigantic hole.
