A Bar or a Spaceship?

Every time I stop at the red light situated across form this bar, restaurant (I am not really sure of what to call it) I am amazed by its size. On weekends it is packed, people inside and out eating, drinking and laughing their blues away. During the week, the tables are not even set up on the sidewalks and very few people are inside. Guess it is due to time and money.

They opened just a few months before the pandemic hit. Surprisingly, they survived. For sure, I thought they would belly up. They started delivering just like many other places did. To be honest, I have never walked in nor even walked on the sidewalk. It is just on my way home.

The other night I need to work late and when I approached the light, I noticed that the bar was all lit up. To me it seemed like a spaceship like the one in the movie Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind. Holly, it took my breath away in the literal sense. So much energy being wasted to lit up that humongous building. The people that live in the surrounding area also came to mind. Imagine that you need not curtains but blackout curtains on every window that faces the bar so you will not be bothered at night.

Bet you, the people in the surrounding area do wish it were a spaceship and jus lifted all the loud drunk people away. I have a friend who leaves three doors down from the bar who says that the lights are not an issue for her, but the noise is.

What do you think? Could it be a spaceship?

Coffee

Love brewing coffee!

Can you smell the coffee (literally speaking) just by looking at the photos below?

It´s not every day that I brew coffee. However, this morning I decided to do so while I was doing the dishes. To the powder, I added a teaspoon of cinnamon. My nutritionist says it is to give my metabolism a kick. Especially this morning I needed a boom to get ready for the events ahead.

People say I make very good coffee. Everything I know about the art of brewing coffee I learned from my father. Yeap, it was dad who made coffee every morning and served mom a cup in bed. However, he made very delicious strong coffee and it did not appeal to mom´s taste buds, so he added some milk. Dad´s coffee was the best. Glad I inherited this art.

It is said that Columbian coffee is the best in the world. “For some people, Colombia coffee is the best coffee in the world. With its varied climates, rich soils and a thriving community of people dedicated to the production of coffee, Colombia is one of the few countries that can produce crop year-round.” (The studio coffee blog) Even if Brazil is in second place, to me it will always be in first place.

Everywhere I travel to I make it a point as to trying out coffee from different countries. I especially like those with special blends, like nutty or chocolatey flavored.

I take my coffee black sugarless. Afterall, I love the taste of coffee and not the taste of sugar.

Chaotic Mindset

Reflection allows us to collect a routine of pure and positive thoughts, this will easily and mechanically do away with all surplus and pessimism. Where there is brightness, darkness does not exist, in the equivalent way, toxic and negative thoughts are just a lack of an uncontaminated and optimistic state of mind.

Reflection is also known as meditation. For some people, meditation is not an easy task to fulfill. If you just focus on your breathing, it is already a form of meditation. Sometimes just trying to rid your mind of whatever thoughts pop in is another way to meditate. There are guided meditation videos that help people relax and let go of all the toxic waste accumulated in their minds.

Have you ever tried meditating when you are in mayhem, tempest state of mind? When you are overwhelmed, just take in a deep breath counting slowly to 4, hold it for 3 seconds and exhale slowly counting to 4. Do it at least 3 times. It will help blow away the clouds in your mind and you can think with a clear slate. Sometimes, even just counting to 10 makes a huge difference. This is especially beneficial when you are ready to sleep at night.

Throughout the day, take moments to replenish your mind.

Amazing Journey

Everything that we encounter on this journey called life, whether it's belongings, acquaintances, illnesses, or problems, they're all momentary. By permitting all things to trail their natural path, we don't grieve loss but rather experience liberty. Like the sun´s rays that honor us with warmth and light; the rain that washes away impurity; or a hug that warms our heart, valuing each component in our lives while it persists shows us to dive ourselves in the present-day moment. So, live and let live. Forgive and forget. Love unconditional. In the end, we do not know how much time we have on this amazing journey.

"Um pão de queijo e uma coxinha"

“Excuse me, miss can you help me please? I'm hungry.”

As I turned around to my left there was an elderly woman nicely snug in her coat on this cold rainy day. I looked at her in the eyes then I could see that she really needed help. She kept telling me that she was collecting cans and bottles so she can make some extra money by recycling them and she had gotten carried away with time. Now she was hungry and didn't have money to spare. So, she asked for a pão de queijo (cheese bread) and a coxinha (fried dumpling stuffed with chicken).

“Certainly ma'am. No one deserves to be hungry. Let's go into the convenience store and I will buy it for you.”

“Is it OK if I come inside with you?”

“Certainly, why wouldn't it be?”

“Well, I had already asked the attendant if she could give me these two savory snacks because I was hungry, and she said that she couldn't. I also asked that old man in the corner and he said he didn't have any money.”

“Well, if the attendant gave you the savory snacks, she would have to deducted it from her paycheck and we don't know what kind of life she lives. Perhaps she needs every dime she makes and can't afford to have any discounted. Same thing goes for the older man. He must make a pension just like you and count his pennies to make ends meet at the end of the month. You, however, go out and collect recyclable bottles and cans. I'm sure that if these two people could help you, they would.”

“Yes, that's true, but I knew that by coming here I would be helped.”

“As a matter of fact I wasn't going to stop at this gas station. I was struggling with the idea of having my windshield wipers changed. You see, they were changed yesterday, but due to the rain I have been suffering to try and see. I was going to stop at the next gas station, but my instincts told me to stop here.”

“I believe that was God. He sent you an Angel to help me.”

“I do believe that God works in mysterious ways. But you know my father taught me that we should never negate food to those who are hungry. If you had asked me for money, we wouldn't be having this conversation. No one deserves to be hungry.”

They said their goodbyes. “God bless you, young lady!”

Stuck for 5 Days

I believe in the saying things happen for a reason. Lately I have been stressing over car issues. As soon as I decided that I was going to get a new car in July, my car became so rebellious that problems started popping up. Mainly heating up. One day was so bad that by the grace of God my car did not catch on fire. Nonetheless, a few parts did melt and the temperature thingy was not working otherwise, I could have stopped.

OK, so I took it to a mechanic who is a friend of the family however, when I told him that I was going to buy a new car in July, he apparently just camouflaged the problem. After that the car started heating up again and I was lucky to find a new garage. OK, it might be pricey and take a little bit longer to repair it, but at least they're finding out that a lot of issues are wrong with my car.

Not being able to drive around, I have been taking taxis and Ubers. I am reluctant in taking Ubers because of all the horror stories you hear. But that's why I say I walk by faith and not sight. There are drivers and there are drivers (I don't know if this is a Portuguese expression) but I have been talking to a lot of interesting drivers.

I'm the kind of person that by making one comment or asking just one question people open up and tell me their whole life story. But then again, I can also just stare out the window and clam up.

One interesting taxi driver that I did talk to drove me to a book fair. We started talking about books and the pleasure of reading and he told me how well his kids were doing in the university which he never had the opportunity, neither him nor his wife to study beyond high school. Nonetheless, he spoke Spanish. He also mentioned that he was taking English. I didn't want I didn't want to get into that conversation so I didn't mention that I was an English teacher. But what he told me about his children really made him proud because I guess that you know his tough life of driving in the city really paid off. His children one was taking education and the other one was studying medicine both at federal universities, therefore, he did not have to support them. What a proud dad. His eyes shone as he talked about his children.

Another driver that I met told me about the place that he lived which was in an apartment above some stores. He stated that the bottom store was actually a jewelry store where the whole family worked during the week. That same week, the parents had gone elsewhere. The father had gone to a fair and the mother was at home working busily. The young adults were taking care of the store. As every week, the son was using this chemical product to clean the jewels or (I didn't understand it too much) some kind of chemical product to clean out the store. However, the son put too much of this product and he inhaled it. Immediately, he called his mother saying that he was having a hard time breathing and that his insides felt like they were burning. Instead of the mother going down to help him, she told him to drink water.  To make a long story short, sadly the young man ended up passing away. We started talking about what made the mother not go and rescue her son or not attend to his cry for help. Anyway, he said that when the father found out that his son had passed, he tried to take his own life by throwing himself under passing cars in front of the store.

I listened to these stories but one was sadder than the other. To change the topic, I asked him what he did when he was at home and he said he liked listening to music but calm music and he preferred not to watch TV that much which made me wonder because I told him my greatest passion was reading and when I was home to relax, I liked to read. Soon enough, we were in my neighborhood. Perhaps that's what started the conversation.  I do live in a dangerous neighborhood but then again where is it safe to live in Sao Paulo nowadays.

To go to school in the morning, because it's very early, I asked my borrowed son - that's how I call him the son from my heart, to drive me to School because it's really early and sometimes it's hard to get a cab which would cost a fortune and or an Uber. So, he said it'd a pleasure to drive me to School, picked me up around 6:00 and he dropped me off around 6:30; quarter to seven depending on the traffic.

It's been quite nice because we've been talking about so many things and I know he's not a talker in the morning and I am, so I try not to say too much because I know how aggravating that could be for people who are not morning people. Perhaps the reason why these days that I'm without a car is just for me and my borrowed son to have some more quality time together. After all, life is busy. It is not always easy to schedule a get together.

Now, that so much is being done to my car, I think I'm going to hang on to it for a little bit longer. Perhaps now that I have made this decision, my car will be less rebellious, more secure and it´ll stop breaking down. My car is hot-headed just like me. It is what it is. As they say in French: C’est la vie!
