Neutral Pronouns in English

Using neutral pronouns in English is becoming more common as individuals identify outside of the traditional gender binary. This is a topic that has been discussed recently amongst educators. While many people have their own opinion about why not to use them or to use them, we need to realize that the world is changing and change can be hard. But, in my opinion, if it makes people feel more comfortable, why not try to adapt to the changes?

Using neutral pronouns is an inclusive and respectful way to acknowledge and affirm the identities of individuals who do not identify as strictly male or female. Instead of using he/him or she/her pronouns, neutral pronouns are used to refer to individuals in a gender-neutral way. Some common neutral pronouns include they/them, ze/hir, and xe/xem. When referring to someone using neutral pronouns, it's important to respect their preferred pronouns and use them consistently. It's also significant to avoid misgendering someone by assuming their gender or using gendered language when referring to them.

In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of gender-inclusive language in academic settings. The acceptance and use of neutral pronouns in academic papers can vary depending on the specific institution, field of study, and the preferences of individual professors or academic journals.

Many academic institutions and publications now encourage or even require the use of neutral pronouns when referring to individuals whose gender identity is non-binary or unknown. However, it is important to check the specific guidelines or requirements of your academic institution or journal before using neutral pronouns in your paper.

If there are no specific guidelines provided, it is generally a good practice to be respectful and inclusive in your language choices. This may involve using gender-neutral language or using the preferred pronouns of the individuals you are referencing or discussing in your paper.

It is also worth noting that using neutral pronouns in academic writing can contribute to creating a more inclusive and diverse scholarly environment.

I came across the article below which has helped understand the importance of using neutral pronouns, especially when it comes to writing.

The Beauty of True Friendship

Friendship is a precious bond that brings joy, support, and companionship into our lives. It is a relationship that goes beyond mere acquaintances and extends to become an integral part of who we are. In this blog entry, we will explore the significance of friendship and how it enriches our lives in countless ways.

One of the fundamental aspects of friendship is trust. True friends trust each other implicitly, knowing that they can confide in one another without fear of judgment or betrayal. Trust forms the foundation upon which strong friendships are built, allowing individuals to be their authentic selves without any pretenses.

Friendship provides a support system like no other. Whether it's celebrating our achievements or comforting us during challenging times, friends are always there to lend a helping hand. They offer advice, encouragement, and sometimes just a listening ear when we need it most. True friends support us unconditionally and stand by us through thick and thin.

Friendship is about creating memories together. From spontaneous adventures to shared laughter over inside jokes, these experiences create bonds that last a lifetime. Friends often have common interests and hobbies that they enjoy doing together, fostering a sense of belonging and companionship.

Having friends has been proven to enhance mental and emotional well-being. They provide a safe space where we can express our feelings openly without fear of judgment. Friends offer empathy, compassion, and understanding, helping us navigate through life's challenges with greater resilience.

True friends inspire personal growth and development by challenging us to become the best version of ourselves. They motivate us to step outside our comfort zones, pursue our dreams, and learn from our mistakes. Through their untiring support, friends play a crucial role in shaping our character and helping us evolve as individuals.

Friendship is a priceless gift that should be cherished and nurtured. It brings immeasurable joy, support, and an indescribable sense of belonging. True friends are like gems in our lives, enriching us with their presence and making every day brighter. So, let's celebrate and appreciate the beautiful friendships we have, and strive to be the kind of friend that others can count on and treasure.

A letter to future me

Dear Future Me,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. As I sit down to write to you, I can't help but reflect on the journey that has led us to this point in time. At 57 years old, I imagine that life has presented you with both joys and challenges, successes and failures. But through it all, I hope that you have remained resilient, optimistic, and true to yourself.

First and foremost, I want to remind you of the importance of taking care of yourself. Our physical and mental wellbeing are the pillars upon which our lives are built. Remember to prioritize self-care, whether it's through regular exercise, healthy eating habits, or simply spending time doing things that bring you joy. Nurture your body and soul so that you may continue to thrive.

I also encourage you to cherish the relationships that have been a part of your life. Your family and friends are invaluable treasures that should never be taken for granted. Reach out to your loved ones often, create new memories together, and cultivate meaningful connections. Remember that life is about the people we share it with.

Furthermore, embrace change and embrace it wholeheartedly. Over the years, we have witnessed how life can be unpredictable and ever-changing. Instead of fearing or resisting these changes, I urge you to see them as opportunities for growth and personal development. Embrace new experiences, learn from them, and let them shape you into a better version of yourself.

As you continue on your journey through life, never lose sight of your passions and dreams. Pursue them with steadfast determination, even if they may seem out of reach at times. Remember that age is just a number; it should never define what we can or cannot achieve.

Lastly, find moments of gratitude in every day. Take a step back from the hustle and bustle of life to appreciate the simple pleasures – a breathtaking sunset, a kind gesture from a stranger, or a heartfelt conversation with a loved one. Gratitude has the power to transform our perspective and bring immense joy into our lives.

Future me, I hope that these words serve as a reminder of the person you have become and the person you strive to be. Life is a beautiful journey, and I trust that you have navigated it with grace and resilience. Remember to always stay true to yourself, embrace change, nurture relationships, pursue your passions, and find gratitude in every moment.

With love and anticipation,

My 57-year-old self

A letter to a younger me

 Dear Younger Me,

I hope this letter finds you well and full of hope for the future. As your older self, there are a few things I want to share with you that might help guide you on your journey.

Firstly, I want to remind you that it's okay to make mistakes. Life is all about learning and growing, and sometimes those lessons come from the mistakes we make. Embrace them, learn from them, and use them as stepping stones towards becoming a better version of yourself.

Secondly, don't be afraid to take risks. It's easy to stay within your comfort zone and avoid anything that feels unfamiliar or challenging. But the truth is, some of the most fulfilling experiences in life come from taking risks and stepping outside of what is familiar. Embrace new opportunities with an open mind and a fearless spirit.

Next, remember to prioritize your own well-being. It's easy to get caught up in the demands and expectations of others, but it's important to take care of yourself first. Make time for self-care, pursue your passions, and surround yourself with people who uplift you and support your dreams.

Additionally, don't be too hard on yourself. You are doing the best you can with what you have at any given moment. Remember that everyone goes through ups and downs in life, and it's okay to ask for help when you need it. You are never alone in this journey.

Lastly, cherish every moment and embrace the present. Life moves quickly, and sometimes we get so caught up in our past regrets or future worries that we forget to truly live in the present moment. Take time to appreciate the little things, be grateful for what you have, and make the most out of every opportunity that comes your way.

Believe in yourself, trust your instincts, and never stop dreaming big. You have so much potential within you, and I have no doubt that you will accomplish incredible things.

 With love and encouragement,

 Your Older Self

A message about the three letters

Dear readers,

For this week´s project, I have written 3 letters, one to a teenager, another to my younger self (wish I wish I had read when I was younger) and the third one to my future self.  By doing this exercise, I have noticed that the messages passed on are very similar. Information and uplifting which I wish I had known and a message to remind me of them for the future.

The style and messages might be the same, however, it is from deep thought and analysis of the years gone by. I am forced to repeat the phrase, which now I understand, “If I knew then what I know now…”

Hope you enjoy reading them.

All the best always.

Me

A Letter to Teens

Dear Teenager,

I hope this letter finds you well and in good spirits. As I sit here, reflecting on my life at the age of 57, I am filled with a mixture of gratitude, wisdom, and a desire to share some important lessons with you. Life is an ever-evolving journey, and as you navigate through your teenage years, there are a few things I want to share with you.

Firstly, embrace your uniqueness. You are one-of-a-kind, with talents, dreams, and aspirations that are entirely your own. Don't let society or others define who you should be or what you should do. Embrace your passions and pursue them fearlessly.

Secondly, failure is not the end; it is merely a stepping stone towards success. Throughout life, you will encounter setbacks and obstacles that may seem undefeatable at times. But remember, every failure is an opportunity to learn and grow. Embrace these challenges with resilience and determination, knowing that they will ultimately shape you into a stronger individual.

Next, cherish your relationships. Friends and family are the pillars of support that will carry you through the toughest times. Invest time and effort into nurturing these connections because they are the true treasures in life. Surround yourself with people who uplift and inspire you, and reciprocate that love and support.

Furthermore, take care of your physical and mental well-being. Nurture a healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly, nourishing your body with wholesome food, and getting enough rest. Equally important is taking care of your mental health. Seek help when needed and engage in practices that promote inner peace and self-care.

Lastly, never stop learning. Education goes beyond the confines of classrooms. Embrace new experiences, explore different cultures, read voraciously, and be curious about the world around you. Knowledge is power, and it opens doors to unimaginable opportunities.

Teenage years can be both exciting and challenging, but remember that every experience is an opportunity for growth. Embrace the journey, trust in yourself, and always remain true to who you are. You have a world of possibilities ahead of you, and I cannot wait to see the incredible person you will become.

 With love,

 My 57-year-old self

Impatience at an Amusement Park

In today's fast-paced world, it's no surprise that both children and teenagers can be incredibly impatient while waiting in line at an amusement park. With their minds constantly stimulated by technology and instant gratification becoming the norm, the concept of waiting patiently can be quite challenging for them. And unfortunately, their impatience can often lead to their parents losing their own patience as well.

As the line slowly inches forward, children and teens may tap their feet, sigh loudly, and constantly check their phones for any form of distraction. Their desire for immediate excitement and entertainment clashes with the reality of waiting their turn, causing frustration to build up within them which in younger children may causes tears of frustration and make teens give up the wait.

This impatience can quickly become contagious, spreading to their parents who find themselves caught in the crossfire. As the minutes tick by, parents may struggle to keep their cool, attempting to calm their restless children while battling their own frustration. The anticipation of a fun-filled day can quickly turn into a test of patience for the entire family.

However, there are some parents that take hold of the moment and make it a teaching and mindful moment. Some play games as “20 questions” and “I spy”. Others calmly explain that waiting your turn is part of life and that after a long 2-hour wait in line, the excitement and fun will be guaranteed in the 2-minute ride.

Ultimately, while it can be challenging for both children and parents, understanding that impatience is a natural response in today's fast-paced world can help diffuse tension. By embracing empathy, creativity, and open communication, families can navigate the waiting process at amusement parks with a little more ease, ensuring that the day remains filled with joy and memorable experiences.

Overthinking

What is the biggest disease of the mind? Overthinking.  Especially too much about what others did, what they should do, what they should have done, what they said, what you desired they had said, why they spoke at all. All of these thoughts raid the mind of its essential peacefulness.

Overthinking is like overeating. The excess weight makes it dreadful to continue light and flexible. Our mind gets attached to little things and progressively these little things become enormous things which we cannot get rid of. Often when we think too much, we imagine things that are not real and overdramatize. Consequently, creating damaging feelings which can cause serious health issues.

A healthy mind equals a healthy body. Overthinking or anything which is “over”, entails willpower. We have the ability to control our thoughts. We do not have the ability to control what comes out of someone´s mouth or how they behave towards us. Therefore, take the reins of your mind through meditation, watching a movie, reading – keeping your mind occupied with a different task other than overthinking. Sounds easy? It may take some discipline, but it can be done. If all else fails, see a therapist.

Tomorrow is not promised. Therefore, take life one day at a time and make the most of that time which you are given.
